Bio

Sylvia de SwaanI’m a Romanian born artist/photographer who has lived and worked in Mexico, Europe and the United States. Over the past thirty years I have produced several significant bodies of photographic work, including “Return,” “Eternity,” and “Sub-version,” that explore the nature of identity in relation to place, memory, conviction and experience.

My photographs have been exhibited and published in the United States, Mexico and Europe. In 2008 I participated in the Format Festival in Derby, UK and in the “In Transition – Russia: Cultural Identity in an Age of Transnational and Transcultural Flux.” Further I have won grants and fellowships from the New York Foundation For the Arts (X3), Arts Link (X3), Art Matters Inc, Aaron Siskind Foundations, Light Work (X2), Austrian Ministry of Culture, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Anderson Ranch Art Center, and others. I currently have a twenty years retrospective at the Picker Gallery at Colgate University, titled “Intersecting Narratives,” and have just completed the fundraising phase for a book project, “Where will you spend eternity,” under the auspices of United States Artists.
